Although the villagers of the middle ages were aware of saline spring, the value of them did not become apparent until 1784 when they started building bathing houses surrounding some of them. The group purchased land on what is now the west side of the parade in the hope of building the baths in the new part of town. However their attempts to find a salt spring were unsuccessful and the baths were eventually built on the other side of the river, close to the old part of town. In July 1814 “The Royal Pump Room and Baths” were officially opened at a cost of £30,000 was claimed to have cured all manner of illnesses and ailments.
