[wpcol_1quarter id=”” class=”” style=””]Rugby is a beautiful market town nestling the banks of the River Avon and is situated 13 miles east of Coventry, in the North-East of Warwickshire, near the borders with Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. Rugby has a population of roughly 63000 people which makes it the second largest town in Warwickshire.
Initially, Rugby was an Anglo-Saxon farming [/wpcol_1quarter] [wpcol_3quarter_end id=”” class=”” style=””][/wpcol_3quarter_end]settlement and was listed in the 1086 Doomsday Book as being named Rocheberie. In 1255, Rugby was granted a charter to allow it to permission to hold a market. The town soon grew from a village into a small market town and stayed as such until the railways came through in the 19th Century. The London and Birmingham Railway was built around the town in 1838 only to have another major line, the Midlands Counties Railway, make a junction at Rugby. As a result, the town became an important railway junction and consequently attracted rail workers to the town. In space of 45 years (1835-1880) the populations quadrupled and the local economy boomed. This led to the attraction of heavy industries in the late 1800’s which turned the town into a considerable industrial centre. With the introduction of motorways and the fact the M1 and the M6 converged nearby, this further increased the magnetism of this lovely town.
Rugby has been made world famous for being the founding town for the game Rugby Football. The invention of the sport is credited to William Web Ellis who in 1823, while playing football at Rugby School, picked up the ball and ran with it.
Another claim to fame for Rugby is the birthplace of the Jet Engine. Sir Frank Whittle built his first prototype here in 1937 at the British Thomson Houston Works.
