The town grew steadily from the 17th century onwards due to its proximity to the Warwickshire coalfields and when the national census of 1801 was conducted, Nuneaton was recorded as already being one of the counties large towns with a population of 5000. Various other industries including textiles, brick, tile making and brewing have since helped Nuneaton grow to what the town is today.
