[wpcol_1quarter id=”” class=”” style=””]Southam is a historical market and stagecoach town with an average population of 6, 509 and is located in the Stratford-on-Avon district of Warwickshire.
Back in 998 AD, the town used to be a royal manor but it was later granted to the Priory of Coventry by King Ethelred. It wasn’t until the 16th Century that the Manor of Southam was surrendered to The[/wpcol_1quarter] [wpcol_3quarter_end id=”” class=”” style=””][/wpcol_3quarter_end]Crown in accordance to the Dissolution of Monasteries.
In the medieval era, the locals of Southam minted their own currency mainly because they find the regular English coins to be too expensive for everyday use. It was also noted that during the English Civil War, the town’s mint was allegedly used to pay for Charles I’s troops. The town also became one of the most important stops for stagecoaches. It is believed that the town’s strategic location played a great role to its development.
Apart from being one of England’s historical market towns, Southam is also known for its Holy Well, also referred to as the “Sacred Spring”, which is said to cure any eye diseases. The Holy Well is also being considered as one of the town’s oldest surviving structures and it is located near the River Stowe which is half a mile far from town itself.
Today, most of Southam’s medieval structures have been replaced with houses and private estates but it still managed to keep its market town ambience. Not only that, the town is also home to a few beautiful venues for engagement parties and wedding receptions.
The Warwick House is not only an ideal place for wedding receptions. It is also a great venue for celebrating birthdays, charity events and corporate functions. The building used to be a hospital for patients with eye and ear diseases but in 1965, it was transformed into a hotel. Today, the venue caters to at least 200 weddings and other special events.
