On the morning of the wedding at Mickleton Hills Farm, the sun was out and it was glorious. There was a slight summer mist in the air, so everything was glowing in the sun.
As I drove down the long, tree-lined drive, I was getting the warm & fuzzies already. It was going to be an awesome day!!
Once I parked, I started wandering around, taking scene-establishing and detail shots. I was getting a feel for the venue and how the weddings work there. To be fair, I had been there before to do a recce, but there was no wedding “buzz” in the air when I visited.
I could see the owner, David, running here, there, and everywhere. Even though he was extremely busy, he still had time to run through the order of things with me.
Considering Mickleton Hills Farm is a new venue, I could see it was very well run. Spoiler Alert: It was well run…absolutely everything went off without a hitch!

When the bride contacted me, I was extremely flattered by her first email. To be honest, I am not sure I could have been more flattered.
It read: My partner and I have recently booked Mickleton Hills Farm for our wedding. I don’t know if you remember me, but I used to run weddings at Blackwell Grange and Davenport House.
I really love the way you work and how you make guests feel comfortable in front of a camera.
Well, I am not sure what you might classify as a compliment, but coming from a person who works with and sees wedding photographers multiple times per week, I class that as AMAZING!

This wedding was a little different. The groom was coming in by helicopter…and it was a complete surprise! I think the bride was more stressed about keeping this secret than all of the wedding organizing combined.
She said to me on the day it was a complete relief to no longer have to watch what she was saying when they were talking about the wedding. It must have been torture! haha!
As a consequence of all the secrets, the usual running order of the bridal preparations was cut in half. There was a hulking great helicopter coming into land and I needed to be there to document the goings on.
So we did what we could to ensure I could properly photograph the bride too, but as with a lot of things in life, we had to compromise. I can only be in one place at a time. However, I think I managed to still tell the story, don’t you?

Apologies if this goes a little too photography specific, but I do love Barn Wedding ceremonies for the following reason. Barn Wedding Venues often have a large window next to where they conduct their ceremonies. It’s as simple as that! Lots of light…
What makes Mickleton Hills Farm special, is they have two! A huge window on either side of the bride & groom as they say the vows.
For wedding photography, you could not really ask for more than that. Plentiful dramatic & directional soft light coming in from two sides. As a wedding photographer, what is not to love about that? Have a look for yourselves…it looks great!!
I just wish the registrar hadn’t got them to kiss when they were at the side of the barn, instead of right in the middle, where they looked at their best. Next time I go there, I will have to have a word.

As a wedding venue, Mickleton Hills Farm is a pretty big site, when you compare it to other Barn Wedding Venues. There is great accommodation, which is something barn venues often lack.
I thought their newly built Wedding Breakfast room was absolutely incredible. I mean, literally jaw-dropping! The first time I walked in, I just said “Wow!” Everyone needs more Wow in their life! haha!
I am not sure what they called, but I also loved the idea of the “chill out” barn out the back. It’s a covered area just off the dance floor. So, during a hot summer, when the music is blaring out, you can take yourself off to calm down outside.
Which I think is a really nice idea and a lovely feature.
For the portrait sessions, this is Mickleton Hills Farm shines. With it being a large site, with plenty of detail, there is plenty of scope for spots to take gorgeous portraits of the Bride & Groom. I was really happy!
At sunset time, I took them on a short walk and the trees opened up to reveal a big colorful sky. I couldn’t have been happier… It was so beautiful! In short, I love this venue! I would like to go again, please!!

Edit: I just had a little bit of feedback from the bride about the blog and I couldn’t resist popping it here at the bottom.
I have just cried reading the blog, it’s so perfect and brings back the best memories ever! Thank you again for everything we had the best time, and the photos are so beautiful!
