Photographing Emma and Darren’s wedding at Talton House & Talton Lodge in Warwickshire was a truly enchanting experience. As a Warwickshire wedding photographer, I was thrilled to capture their special day at such a charming venue. The blend of rustic charm and modern conveniences provided the perfect backdrop for their celebration. The outdoor options and quirky lodge accommodation set a relaxed, festival-themed atmosphere that made the event unforgettable.
Talton House & Talton Lodge allowed Emma and Darren to celebrate their love story in a setting that felt both personal and unique. The natural beauty of the grounds, coupled with the delightful double tipi, offered countless opportunities for capturing heartfelt moments. From the intimate exchange of vows to the joyous celebrations with friends and family, every moment was steeped in the magic of this picturesque location.
As a wedding photographer in Warwickshire, it’s a joy to work at venues like Talton House & Talton Lodge that offer such diverse and charming settings. The combination of scenic landscapes, cozy interiors, and the presence of friendly animals like chickens and dogs adds a touch of whimsy to the experience. For couples looking for a wedding venue in Warwickshire that feels both personal and extraordinary, Talton House & Talton Lodge is a hidden gem.
1) Please tell me how you first met.
Emma – We met late one night in a club, the shame of it! I had been out with some friends and wanted to dance. My friends wanted an early night, but I’ve always been confident enough to walk into somewhere and have a good time, so I went in alone.
Darren was on a (amateur) cricket tour and, having played in a local village team, he and his teammates were celebrating a win.
I chatted with one of his teammates, and then Darren swooped in, bought me a Jager bomb, and we chatted for the rest of the evening.
Darren – Emma remembers this far better than I do, but she neglected to mention that I was dancing on a table before I spotted her and jumped down!

2) When did you know they were the one?
Emma – Darren moved from London to live with me after a year of back and forth on weekends. By then, we had been skiing together and had had adventures in Guatemala and Belize. I loved his sense of adventure and the fact that he left his city lifestyle to be with me. He commuted to London for nearly 3 years before taking another job. I don’t think there was ever one moment, just a growing realisation that this man was making my life so much more colourful and fun. I knew I didn’t want to be without him.
Darren – For me, it wasn’t necessarily the moment I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, but I knew the week after we first met that this was different and special. We had two weeks after we first met before our first date, and we spent the whole time texting. I remember thinking how easy and natural it felt to have conversations that would last for days. There were no silly games, just genuine excitement. It quickly became apparent that we shared many passions, and I can’t imagine life without Emma now.

3) Could you give us the story of the proposal?
Emma – It was our 5 year anniversary, and we took a trip to London to see Hamilton at the theatre. Whilst waiting for the train, Darren seemed more restless than usual. I put it down to the fact we had lunch reservations at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and the train was running late. After lunch, we checked into our hotel. He poured me a glass of wine, and as I checked out the views of St Paul’s & The Shard from the balcony, he got down on one knee and proposed.
It wasn’t a surprise, as we had talked about getting married, but it made the weekend special. After Hamilton (which was amazing) we went to Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, something I had long wanted to tick off the bucket list.
Darren – A fair bit of planning went into that. I spent months speaking to Emma’s best friend, trying to make sure I got the perfect ring and tried to plan the perfect day (as per below, dinner, show, live music + plenty of decent wine). I had an elaborate speech that I planned to give before unveiling the ring, but I was so nervous that I couldn’t give it and just dropped and blurted out, “Will you marry me?”.
4) If you don’t mind sharing, can you tell me something quirky, funny or silly about your partner?
Emma – Darren is a data geek and can give you some ridiculously weird facts about the England cricket team’s past and present. He’s also geeked on wine and is now my personal sommelier 🙂
Apparently, I can’t load the dishwasher properly.
Darren – She’s right about the dishwasher, but I shouldn’t complain given her amazing ability to make a house a home; she’s got an incredible imagination when it comes to interior design.
As our family has expanded with various furry friends (3 cats & a revolving door of trainee guide dogs), we’ve taken to narrating the thoughts of our dogs; we now find ourselves having more conversations with each other via the imaginary voice of the dog than we do directly with each other!
5) What is your perfect day together?
Emma – Long dog walk in the morning, catching up with friends over a lazy lunch somewhere that does great food and wine and then seeing some live music in the evening. We love live music, and the weekend after our wedding will be seeing our 50th gig together, which just happens to be our favourite band, Elbow.
Darren – yeah, this!

6) Apart from the obvious, what are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?
Emma – We are having a 2-day event. As an older bride, I have been to a lot of weddings, and the bride always says afterwards how quickly it goes and how they feel sad they did not get to speak to everyone. We wanted to be able to properly catch up with our guests AND enjoy the day fully, so we have gone for a venue where most guests can stay onsite. On the Friday evening, we will be catching up with people, some of whom we have not seen for over 2 years because of the pandemic.
Saturday will be for the two of us to enjoy our family and friends’ company but also to enjoy the day ourselves. To listen to the bands we have booked, to enjoy playing a game of croquet on the lawn, to wander the grounds together and not feel bad that we are not talking to people all the time.
Darren – just having a couple of days with all our favourite people, doing what we love most: smiling, drinking, dancing & eating!
7) What inspired you to go for the theme or the decor you chose for your wedding?
Emma – The feel of Talton House and particularly Talton Lodge kind of set the festival theme because of the outdoor options, the double tipi and the quirky lodge accommodation.
One night, after a few wines and listening to dance music, we had the lightbulb moment. Darren’s last name is Wright. We liked the relaxed festival theme, and the ‘Aisle of Wright’ was born.
We were initially supposed to be getting married on a Tuscan Vineyard in 2021, but that became impossible due to the pandemic and to cut a very long and painful story short, we decided to cut our losses and have a UK wedding.
Darren – It was really important that we had a wedding that reflected who we are, and we were prepared to wait to have the wedding we wanted rather than something substandard for the sake of getting married (hence why it’s taken us 4 years from when we got engaged!). With the festival theme, it’s really allowed us to put our shared passions – delicious food, great wine and amazing music – at the heart of it.

8) Please tell me one thing you wish you had known at the beginning of your wedding planning process that you could pass on to future brides reading this blog.
Emma – Plans change, so be flexible. As a program manager, I like to plan every detail, but some things are out of your control, so just accept them and move on. Sometimes, the new plan works out better than the original!
Darren – one piece of advice: avoid planning a wedding during a global pandemic!

9) When searching, what were you looking for in a wedding venue?
Emma – Although we wanted all our guests to be able to stay onsite with us, we didn’t want a hotel ‘factory’ wedding. I didn’t like the idea of us turning up for our wedding and seeing last night’s wedding guests leave, we wanted ours to be more personal and secluded. I was discussing this with a friend one day, and she recalled a wedding that she had been to at Talton a few years before. I looked it up and was immediately intrigued.
We visited in person the same week and fell in love. It’s quirky, it’s personal, and it had everything we were looking for (and some things we were not!). They had 1 wedding slot available for 2022, and we grabbed it (Talton only does around 8 weddings a year).
Olivia and Barney have been relaxed and very helpful throughout the whole process. We love that Olivia cooks the food, and everything is locally sourced. We love that we have an amazing natural backdrop, which we don’t have to ‘decorate’ to make it look incredible. We love that they have chickens, cats and dogs roaming onsite and having shared our wedding website with all our guests, we love that they are so excited to come to a wedding with a bit of a difference.
I just hope it doesn’t rain!

10) Could you tell me the process you went through when you were looking for a wedding photographer?
Emma – We had booked the venue 10 months in advance, so we were late to the party. I started to ask some photographers that had been recommended by colleagues but found that the few I got in touch with were not available.
I then turned to the Talton website and saw that they had recommendations for photographers and figured it would be advantageous to get someone who knew the venue. We chose Duncan because his work best encapsulated the relaxed vibe we want. Yes, we want those ‘special images’ that our parents can frame, but we don’t want to spend hours posing for formal shots. We felt that Duncan had a perfect balance.
